What is a birthstone?

A birthstone is the precious or semi-precious stone associated with the month of our birth that brings luck into our lives. Each month is associated with one or more stones that have unique and special characteristics, while at the same time they are said to have healing properties! Of course, they are addressed to all of us regardless of gender, age, origin or religion. So what is your precious birthstone?

Birthstones: The beginning

Since ancient times there were many who believed in the special powers of precious or semi-precious stones, associating them with good luck, health and well-being. Of course, at that time the birthstone and its mystical powers were more related to the color of the stone. However, there are not a few precious stones that have been linked to myths, legends, stories and religions.

Aaron's armor (Bible) which was decorated with 12 precious and semi-precious stones, thus representing the 12 tribes of Israel, seems to be probably the origin for connecting the precious stones with the 12 months of the year. Of course, the Romans and the Arabs also associated the precious stones with the twelve months of the year and with the zodiac signs. The multitude of different names, as well as the discovery of new stones, made it difficult to create an international list of birthstones. As recently as 1912 an attempt was made by the National Jewelers Association of America (American National Association of Jewelers) to finalize the list of birthstones and all the information we have about them.
